Team PIEZO
We are an undergraduate research team whose goal is to develop a novel product which integrates piezoelectric material into cellphone touchscreens in order to harvest energy and augment the cellphone's battery life.
Research Problem: Piezoelectric materials, which can convert mechanical pressure to electrical energy, are underused as a source of alternative energy. Specifically, piezoelectrics are underutilized because they are capable of harvesting energy for small electronic touchscreen devices. These devices are an integral part of today's society, and their battery life never seems to be sufficient, which can be both inconvenient and potentially dangerous in emergency situations. Piezoelectrics can produce a convenient and clean source of energy for these devices with the pressure generated simply from using it.
Research Question: How can a piezoelectric device be use in a touchscreen to detect the location of applied pressure on the screen and to harvest energy in order to extend cell phone battery life?
